Cyber-security is the topic de jour at Davos, not just in the scheduled sessions but in the ad hoc meetings too.
It can be a tough topic for small businesses to get to grips with, but it's a great example of how a bit of work now - often less than you'd think - can avert massive risks later.
Here's seven tips to get you started:
1. Establish a Cyber Security Culture: Train employees on the importance of cyber security, the risks associated with online activity, and the company's policies regarding cyber security. In-person train can work wonders in de-mystifying cyber for your team.
2. Educate Yourself: Understand the threats and risks associated with cyber security, and consider investing in additional resources from professionals or vendors to ensure that your systems are up-to-date and secure.
3. Protect Your Network: Implement a firewall, anti-virus software, and other security measures to protect your network from malicious attacks.
4. Monitor Your Network: Establish a system of monitoring and logging to detect any attempts to breach your security, as well as any suspicious activity.
5. Perform Regular Backups: Ensure that all data is backed up regularly, and stored securely offsite.
6. Monitor Your Employees: Monitor employee activity to ensure that they are following the company’s security policies, and to detect any risky or suspicious activity.
7. And if in doubt, consult an expert.
